Massive property tax recovery drive underway in Punjab

Lahore: Under the directives of Director General Excise and Taxation Punjab, Umar Sher Chattha, a province-wide crackdown on property tax defaulters is in full swing. The operation, aimed at recovering outstanding dues, has already led to the sealing of more than 9,700 commercial and semi-commercial properties across Punjab between March 1 and March 5. According to official data, property owners collectively owed over Rs300 million in unpaid taxes. As a result of the strict enforcement measures, more than 3,000 defaulters have cleared Rs55 million in dues within just five days, leading to the unsealing of their properties. Read: Punjab to provide alternatives for those affected by anti-encroachment drive Chattha has instructed all district and zonal Excise and Taxation Officers (ETOs) to continue sealing defaulting properties daily and ensure complete recovery of pending taxes by March 25. The drive will remain in effect until June 30, with legal action planned against those who fail to comply despite repeated notices. While reviewing tax collection progress, Chattha highlighted that the Punjab Excise and Taxation Department has successfully collected Rs38.8 billion by the end of February—achieving 68% of its annual target of Rs57 billion. He reiterated the department’s commitment to meeting 100% of the revenue target by the fiscal year’s end. Property owners are urged to settle their outstanding dues promptly to avoid further action and contribute to the province’s development.
