LAHORE: Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb announced that the Punjab government is set to launch a new airline, Air Punjab, following directives from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. The initiative is aimed at improving domestic connectivity and offering an alternative to the national carrier, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). Speaking at a press conference, Aurangzeb explained that the provincial government plans to initiate feasibility studies for Air Punjab soon. The project will be backed by private investors, who will bring both capital and expertise to the venture, ensuring its success. While the details surrounding the government’s exact stake in Air Punjab are still under discussion, the provincial administration is expected to retain a significant share in the airline. The move follows the failed attempt to privatize PIA last week after the only bid fell far short of the minimum asking price of Rs85 billion.
