Karachi: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has approved PKR 1.5 billion for the repair and reconstruction of roads, flyovers, and underpasses damaged by the 2024 heavy rainfall, as reported on September 19. As per details, this decision follows a detailed assessment of the damage and is aimed at addressing significant infrastructure issues across the city. Read: Sindh launches ‘Sasti Basti’ initiative for affordable housing During a high-level meeting at the CM House, CM Shah directed the Local Government Department to conduct a thorough inquiry into the quality of recent roadworks carried out since 2022, highlighting that many have been compromised by the recent floods. “The substandard quality of work is unacceptable, and those responsible must be held accountable,” emphasised the Chief Minister. The meeting, attended by key officials including Minister for Planning and Development Nasir Shah, Minister for Local Government Saeed Ghani, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab, and other senior figures, reviewed extensive damage reports. The assessment revealed that a total of 17,861,500 square feet of roads were affected, with significant damage across multiple districts: South (909,500 sq ft), East (795,000 sq ft), Central (832,000 sq ft), West (13,750,000 sq ft), Korangi (5,555,000 sq ft), Malir (625,000 sq ft), and 395,000 sq ft of flyovers and bridges. In response to the findings, the Chief Minister has sanctioned the allocated funds to ensure the restoration of 120 critical roads, flyovers, and underpasses, with an emphasis on high-quality repairs. Additionally, under the CLICK program, six major infrastructure projects are set to commence, including new flyovers and road improvements across various districts.
