QUETTA: In a collaborative effort between the Quetta Metropolitan Corporation (QMC) and the irrigation department, a comprehensive plan has been devised to reclaim rain nullahs to their original state by eliminating all encroachments, according to a news report.
This joint endeavour seeks to shield the provincial capital, Quetta, from urban flooding, a recent repercussion of heavy rainfall.

Muhammad Hamza Shafqaat, the QMC Administrator, emphasized on Sunday that Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti has taken decisive action in response to the urban flooding issue, instructing the initiation of a campaign to dismantle all unauthorized structures erected along the rain nullahs by individuals.
Shafqaat highlighted, “At 82 different sites, rain nullahs had been encroached upon, impeding the natural flow of rainwater during downpours.” Efforts are underway to expedite the cleaning of waste sites and the clearance of all obstructed drains, with the goal of enhancing Quetta’s cleanliness and hygiene.

He further urged citizens to uphold environmental cleanliness and refrain from encroaching upon nullahs. The presence of sewerage lines has exacerbated foul odors, while the improper disposal of plastic bags and other solid waste materials has contributed to the obstruction of rain nullahs, hindering the smooth passage of water. |
