Survey in works to identify less populated areas of Punjab for setting up SEZs

Islamabad: The Senate Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat led by Senator Saadia Abbasi issued directives for the Secretary of the Board of Investment (BOI) and the Punjab government to collaboratively conduct an extensive survey for setting up Special Economic Zones (SEZs), as per news reported on January 3. Read: ‘Setting up SEZs crucial for country’s economic development’ As per the details, the survey will be conducted to identify an appropriate location for the SEZs, making sure it has least population density and minimal adverse effects on local agriculture and the environment. The committee meeting addressed a public petition concerning the proposed establishment of an SEZ near the Hakla Interchange—an initiative announced by the Board of Investment. The Secretary of the Board of Investment clarified that SEZs are typically established within provinces and fall under federal government jurisdiction. However, the federal government has outlined plans to create a Model Zone near Islamabad, serving as a benchmark for other Special Economic Zones.
