Sindh to provide subsidised solar power system across province

Karachi: Sindh Energy Minister Imtiaz Sheikh on Thursday (February 16) announced an across-the-board subsidy on 0.2 million solar power systems for domestic use, news sources reported. Read: WB approves PKR 56.7 bn loans for solar power project in Tarbela The subsidy will be provided to the rural and urban districts across the province with the help of the World Bank (WB). Minister Imtiaz made this announcement during a meeting with the WB Country Director for Pakistan Najy Benhassine. The project, according to the minister, aims to increase access to affordable, renewable energy for the general public and lessen reliance on costly fossil fuel-based power generation. In rural Sindh areas, the government would offer household subsidies totalling USD 160, while subsidies totalling USD 110 would be offered in urban areas per unit of the solar power system. Previously, the project was only launched in 10 districts, but it will now be available to all citizens in the province.
