Lahore: The Pakistan Railways (PR) has decided to upgrade and rehabilitate its infrastructure under the Main Line-1 (ML-1) project, news sources reported on February 4.

Under the ML-1’s infrastructure upgradation project, the PR will spend PKR 9.8 billion on rehabilitating the track and signalling system from Karachi to Peshawar, and the dualisation of the 462.20-kilometre-long track from Lahore to Peshawar. As per the PR sources, the department has planned to improve train speed up to 160 kilometres per hour (Km/h) with the procurement of 230 passenger coaches and 820 high-capacity wagons. The official said that around 46 Completely-Built-Up (CBU) passenger coaches have been procured up till now, while the remaining 184 coaches would be manufactured in the country. In addition, the department has installed a Computer Based Interlocking (CBI) system on 48 stations along the ML-I route to improve signaling and interlocking for increased train speed and safety.

It is pertinent to mention that the federal government has recently approved PKR 14 billion for PR. The said funds will be utilised for the rehabilitation and track development in Balochistan and Sindh in the aftermath of the recent floods. |
