Kalma Chowk Remodelling project: Underpass’s one side likely to open soon

Lahore: Punjab Central Business District Development Authority (PCBDDA) Executive Director (Technical) and Project Director Engineer Riaz Hussain shared that one side of the Kalma Chowk Remodelling project might open to traffic by February 15, a news source reported on February 5. Read: Kalma Chowk Underpass remodelling enters next phase; traffic plan shared As per the details, one side of the underpass, from Barkat Market/Garden Town to Gulberg Main Boulevard and Liberty Chowk Roundabout, will become operational by February 15. To meet this deadline, construction has been geared up as additional labour has been deployed to continue work round-the-clock. Taking notice of the traffic hurdles and congestion, the government wants to completely make the said road operational ahead of the Pakistan Super League (PSL)’s cricket matches starting in Lahore on February 26. Moreover, the project director mentioned that the caretaker Minister for Communication & Works Bilal Afzal has been assigned to monitor the progress of the project daily. An official of PCBDDA (whose name was not disclosed) mentioned that the work is underway related to piles, and excavation of the underpass – from the existing Kalma Chowk underpass entering the old Walton Airport area and terminating at the CBD project site. It was disclosed that work on the rigid pavement and laying of the base, sub-base, and asphalt will be completed by February 15. The official stated that once this is completed, the construction work will be shifted to lintel-related works for the remaining portion along with the starting work at the Centre Point, where the second underpass is planned. These points are expected to be opened to traffic by the end of next month.
